Princess Nonie

At long last, some of the doings of Sidonie for Fall and Spring (2012 and 2013) posted on flickr. Watch this space for a “best of” movie with highlights of her year so far.

Soon summer will be here, or so we in the north mid-west like to dream, and, of course, pictures will be taken (and posted more frequently, we promise).

Love to all …

Very Zen

Filed under:family,landmarks,photos,random,video — posted by nathaniel & nicole on August 30, 2012 @ 12:11 pm

very-zen

After a very steamy summer (heat indices well over 100/40) a lot, fall is already settling in here in the north midwest, so we are enjoying the last days of sun and fun as much as possible.

Nonie loved summer camp (no pics sadly as the camera was MIA) — lots of swimming and boating and outdoor sports and activities, and basketball training, oh, and more swimming) — and has loved going to water parks and having play dates and riding her bike (she can ride a very big girl bike now). Lots of Mummy and Daddy time and even a visit to Miss Jane at Lifeways where she got to show all of the little kids how big she has gotten (i.e. she gave heaps of piggy back rides).

We went off to Door County (the peninsula north east of us that separates Green Bay from Lake Michigan) for two nights. Really, really beautiful. We found delightful beaches, gorgeous state parks, and yummy food (oh, and bugs, of course). Nonie made lots of friends, loved the ferry to Washington Island, and rode nearly 11 miles (18 kilometres) on a rented bike.

Nonie’s favourite phrase of the summer: “that’s awkward!”

School has started for the very big kids, and Nonie is very excited to join Miss Jeanette in Grade 1 (which is upstairs!!!) at DMA after Labor Day.

Love to everyone. We miss you heaps! See you here at nerdtobe soon with some video highlights and, most likely, after Thanksgiving with more pics and news.

Birthday parties, basketball, sewing and the 4th of July!

Me and daddy have uploaded a mish mash of great photos and videos from June 2012, including a visit from Patrick Lichty, and camel and bike rides in Milwaukee (the latter I learned from walking to trail-blazing – literally – in 3 days flat!). I saw cousins and aunts, uncles and grandparents, good friends and newborns (and art!) in New York, and helped daddy pick images from my folks’ time in Leeds. It was my first time away from Mommy and Daddy, while Pop-pop and Babba, in from NYC, took care of me at home. It was super fun – and I’ve been loving JCC camp – but I’m glad to have my parents back just in time for the 4th of July. Yay, fireworks! TWICE! I’ve been learning to read and doing lots of fun math over the Summer, too. Today: bike parade! More photos soon. Love to all my fans – Nonie.

Nonie 6.0 !!!

Filed under:family,landmarks,photos,random — posted by nathaniel & nicole on June 3, 2012 @ 3:24 pm

As the lake continues to make for a strange spring (temperatures shift day to day from 80/26 to 50/10) we celebrated¬† Sidonie’s sixth birthday in style, and a lot!

Unbelievable, but true: Nonie is SIX!!!

“Now I am six I am as clever as clever. So I think I’ll be six for ever and ever.”

Christopher Robin, A.A. Milne.

The birthday extravaganza started May 22 when we decorated cookie packets for everyone in Nonie’s class to hand out after her birthday story (about her name).

Birthday eve cake followed. Birthday morning the girl opened presents; after school more presents and then out to share a birthday party with Christiane. The next night was dinner with Hans, Soy and Eva (who are, sadly, leaving town). After breaking in her new ballet shoes, we all undertook the annual pilgrimage on Memorial Day to fly kites and ride bikes and go-karts. On Saturday June 2, after hot chocolate and her first piano recital, the PARTY! Bowling and friends and cake and games! Oh, and lots of girl hugs! Nonie, without any help, managed two strikes and a very reputable score of 105

Thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes, for sharing my celebrations with me in so many ways, and, of course, for the fabulous gifts.

Videos to follow from Dad soon. Watch this space!

A catch up on the doings of Sidonie (aka Nonie, aka Noodlepop, aka Princess Nonie, aka babyshoes, aka Crystal Blossom)

What hairy, toothless beast is behind those goggles?

I met Santa Claus. I know he was real. I pulled his beard!

A quick roundup from the last few months:
I beat Daddy at the Dreidel Game.
I had a fabulous Christmukkah (Spoilt by all. Thanks guys!).
I’ve been to Florida twice to hang out with the family and escape from the cold.
I had heaps of special zoo classes (I even got to go behind the animal enclosures), gymnastics, art with Granny Nora, and piano! I rock on the keyboard!
I got to have a lot of fun at the College Art Association Conference in LA. The papers were boring, but the running and dancing was cool. I also got to make art with Mummy and Daddy and friends for the Non Human Turn conference here in MiWi!
Add to that school fieldtrips, lots of game time, learning to read, becoming good at math, refining my drawing, attending parties and dinners and playdates, and LOSING MY TEETH! Oh, and of course, being silly, and funny, and loving, and using lots of big words, all made for a busy and delightful whirl of a winter-spring.

Miss you all. Hugs and Kisses and Fairy Princess Wishes! (Because I was one you know. When I lived with the other fairies, mermaids and the dinosaurs, before I decided to get into Mummy’s tummy).

Season’s Greetings!

Popop, Babba, Nonie and Pink Ball. A Portrait.

A few winter pics for Nonie’s fans. Sorry they are so meagre, but Nonie has now learned to use the video and the self-timer on the camera (but has also changed many of the settings, unbeknownst to all. So, many, many photos blurred and under exposed — most not included here, as you will be relieved to see).

It has been a remarkably mild winter here on the third coast. We are usually pretty precocious about snow, beating the winter start (December 15) by weeks. But, other than one bone shattering day (15F and -12C) it has almost been balmy with a few inches here and there, but nothing that has stayed on the ground.

Thanksgiving (with Babba and Popop, and Rob, Nakia and Sunny — a delight) has come and gone, the Christmukkah Bush is trimmed, the gifts are wrapped, Nonie has met with Santa (he was real, she pulled his beard to check) and the social whirl has gently escalated as we continue the season of celebrations.

We now officially have three accents in the family: South African-English with an Irish tinge, Brooklyn-Midwest with an Afrikaans flavour, and Brooklyn-English-Midwest (with the “why don’cha” Wisconsonian edge coming to dominate). The other day Nonie flummoxed both Nat and me when she announced she was going to do some pombs (rhymes with bombs). Took a good while for us to get that it was poems she was going to share!

Wishing you and yours all the very best of the holiday season.
Love the N Cubed in Milwaukee!

All Together Now: Aww, Cute!

This is Nonie and her new cousin Kaylee.

Welcome beautiful girl!

As you all know, we have had a remarkable series of summer/winter adventures.

First Nonie “graduated” from Lifeways, then it was off to NYC, Montreal, Mekoos with heaps of delightful folks and art-making (Generating the Impossible, indeed!), then back to NYC and off to Joburg, Cape Town (where we also got to hang out with Milwaukee folks: Rob, Nakia and Henderson), Joburg and many, many, many fantastic visits with friends and family (and dogs), as well as a glorious road trip with our friends from Milwaukee Yev and Jim, through Mpumlanaga, Limpopo, Kurger Park and Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal, ending on a beach house on the Dolphin Coast.

Then it was back through NYC and off to big girl school full time.

We had hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of photos, so this is just a snapshot (hee!). But sadly, we also burnt out, so many wonderful times and fabulous peeps are not captured here, but are in our hearts.
